"Break his teeth!"
You might expect to hear that shouted at an extreme fighting match or at a back-alley gang fight. You might be surprised to hear it coming from the lips of someone referred to as "a man after God's own heart." Yet that is exactly what David exclaimed in Psalm 58:6--and he wasn't kidding!
What is real interesting is who David said this to. It was to God!
You see, David was under attack from wicked men who would say anything and do anything to get what they wanted. When someone does us wrong we want to retaliate--we want to break their teeth! Sometimes we do retaliate as we try to take matters into our own hands.
What we see in this psalm is a child of God who was frustrated with how he was being treated. We see someone who wanted wrong-doers severely punished. "Let them vanish...like a slug melting away as it moves along" (vv7-8) David exclaimed. He didn't just want their teeth knocked out--he wanted them eradicated!
What we learn from this psalm is that frustration with others and a desire for wrongs to be avenged is a normal part of life. But we also learn that we should turn these situations over to God. Vengeance is okay--as long as it is God who is doing it.
So the next time you feel like punching in someone's teeth, tell the Lord about it! Express to Him your frustration. Tell Him how you really feel. Then leave it to Him to settle matters. He'll do a much better job than you ever could.
