You've seen the TV shows where the bad guy is on trial and the prosecution is confident they will get a conviction. Then, the star witness for the state takes the stand and changes his story. Somehow, some way, the defendant got to him and caused him to lie. Now the jury is left confused and leaning towards an acquittal unless the prosecutor can come up with either new evidence or a better witness. Truth may be elusive in those TV dramas, and it certainly is elusive when it comes to real life. We live in a post-modern age where "truth" is relevant to the person considering it. This thinking, which is prevalent in our society, says that something can be true to me but not true to you. This, however, is a complete rejection of God and His word. And it is a trap that believers can fall into if we are not careful. 2 John emphasizes the importance of truth. Truth is something that can "abide in us and will be with us forever" (v2). But it is something in which we must choose to walk (v6). Truth is also something that we must guard, as there are many people who reject the truth and who would seek to turn our hearts away from it (vv10-11). Ultimately, we must remember the words of Christ when He said "I am the way, the truth and the life." Do you want to know the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Then embrace Christ, His love, and His message. Don't let anything turn your heart or your mind away from Him.
